I kept attacking the English coastal forts, taking their money, and returning to a town I had now seized from the English and gotten the governship of. This eventually gained me three 2nd rate ship of the lines. I had also upgraded my ship a little bit, so I could board a big ship, and then take care of it's entourage. I got my ships fixed, and went out to look for better ships travelling alone.
It didn't go as smoothly as planned, but I learned you could get a lot of money from towns if you did not annex them. Once I had succeeded in getting 2 good ships (2nd Rate ship of the line, and a 4th rate), I decided to assault my first fort. This gave me their troops, which increased morale a little. I used grape shots only, to lessen the crew but to minimize damage.Īfter a while of this, I joined spain. I kept as many soldiers as I could so that boarding would be easy, and tried to keep the ships in tact. I tried to balance the gains and losses to the best of my ability by avoiding fights as much as possible, and only attacking single larger ships with small crews. I did missions here and there, and increased my fleet slowly, and improved it slowly. I didn't want to die and lose everything by challenging a ship or fleet too large (I do allow saving in my game, but I only use it if I make an unintended mistake). I sold all the ships I boarded at a town, and kept upgrading slowly. I upgraded my ship again, and used it to board larger ships. I decided not to challenge the crew for their gold, since I didn't want enemies, vice versa, I wanted friends. I had gathered some men, and the fight was relatively easy, just had to avoid the larger fleets while at sea. I took a mission from someone to go and find a marooned ship. I thought of losing a fight just so I could get off that damned island, but I made just enough money for a small ship to leave it, and I didn't want to risk losing my equipment. That slowly gained me a few levels and improved skills, as well as a little money to upgrade my equipment. I attacked bandits and what not on the small island I started from.
Other tips are welcome on this thread as well. I've been raiding around the coasts for a while now, demanding tribute from everybody, and I thought I'd write a little guide in how I ended up where I am now.
